The 2nd part of my London Jazz Festival fix came in the form of Brazilian Seu Jorge whom i first knew watching City of God and then hilariously in The Life Aquatic. I wanted to bring my mother to one of these gigs and I knew only a lively beat could satisfy her rock'n'roll roots. Naturally with his band and mix of bossanova and samba I felt this perfect for her as it would be something we could dance to. For me, all i really wanted to hear were his acoustic cover versions of David Bowie which he did for Life Aquatic - and when he played it, especially Life on Mars, Mr Jorge didnt disappoint and I have the video to prove it. This time we arrived early and managed to be right at the front despite jostling with inconsiderate brazilian women who were so busy gyrating they knocked into Joanne's beer twice causing it to spill on her. However due to the non-existent and redundant Giles Peterson supposedly "forgetting" to pack his vinyl records thus being 1 hour late, we ended up having sore feet while shuttling back and forth to the toilet (beer, lah) while the rest of us stood our ground to ensure our prime spot was not usurped by other people. Still, a great performance with plenty of rapport with the crowd despite his limited grasp of english. Just goes to show how far World Music can go, regardless of any language barrier. Is there Life on Mars?
